What is apex of the tooth?

The apex of a tooth is the pointed end of the root of the tooth. It is the narrowest and most distal part of the root, where the nerves and blood vessels that supply the tooth enter and exit. The apex is covered by a thin layer of cementum, which anchors the tooth to the bone of the jaw. Oftentimes, when a tooth becomes infected or damaged, a root canal treatment is necessary to remove the infected or damaged tissue from the apex to preserve the tooth.
